Old Dominion University is a public, four-year learning instution in Norfolk Virginia. The school is large, with nearly 20,000 undergraduate students, 91% of whom are residents of the State of Virginia. Old Dominion University offers students the opportunity to earn a PhD in English in an online format. Students typically dedicate five to six years of full time study, though the last couple of years will be almost exclusively focused on a students dissertation. Three courses are required of all full-time English PhD students: Major Debates in English Studies, Empirical Research Methods and Project Design, and a Dissertation Seminar. There are three emphases for this degree, and students will take eighteen credit hours from their chosen specialization, plus twelve elective credit hours.) Students are also required to demonstrate mastery of a foreign language, whether by achieving successful grades in undergraduate language courses or by testing out of the requirement.
