Overview
Originally founded in 1888 as a high school offering technical classes for boys and business classes for girls, Cogswell Polytechnical College became a college in 1930 and has been distinguishing its history in California with a curriculum that fuses art and engineering. The Sunnyvale campus, located in the heart of the Silicon Valley, offers an intimate and stimulating academic environment that enables its students to earn a BA degree in Digital Art and Animation or Entrepreneurship and Innovation or a BS degree in Digital Arts Engineering, Digital Audio Technology, Computer Engineering or Software Engineering. Through a project-based education that emulates the collaborative, cross-discipline industry environment, Cogswell has produced many students who have gone on to forge successful careers with many of the world's most renowned companies in the digital media and engineering fields.
Student Appeal
The school combines project-based learning in the digital arts, engineering, technology and entrepreneurship with a broad foundation in general education to prepare students to move quickly into the converging global digital media industries, as well as into professions that are changing almost daily. Most of Cogswell's faculty members have strong industry experience and connections, and are thus able to provide the finest possible academic programs that encourage creativity and exploration. The legion of Cogswell alumni also provides assistance through internships, jobs, workshops and other bridges to industry.
Financial
Financial aids are available to eligible students in the form of scholarships and grants such as the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), Cal Grant A, and Cal Grant B.
- Computer EngineeringComputer Engineering
This program combines a balance between hardware and software to produce professionals who design, develop, and test next generation computer hardware. Through specializations in VLSI and Solid State, Communication Systems, Robotics and Embedded System, or Sensors, Actuators, and Control Systems, graduates are capable of handling the latest advances in VLSI and MEMS technologies.
- Digital Art and AnimationDigital Art and Animation
Featuring coursework that bridge traditional and digital arts classes and includes solid components of theory, production, and general education, this program offers training in four concentrations: 3D Animation, Entertainment Design, Game Design, and 3D Modeling. Students collaborate on multidisciplinary teams to complete real world projects, developing a production plan and producing a senior reel that integrates the principles, techniques, and skills acquired in their coursework.
- Digital Arts Engineering Digital Arts Engineering
Combining a necessary balance between software and digital arts, this curriculum prepares enrollees to work at the intersection of engineering and digital art. Students acquire skills in programming languages, tools programming, scripting languages, software development, concept design, modeling, texturing, rigging, animation, computer simulation, visualization and game engine programming, with concentrations in Game Design & Development and Technical Arts available for greater specialization.
- Digital Audio Technology Digital Audio Technology
This program is designed for those seeking professional careers in the audio industry, with an opportunity to focus on audio production (music production, sound effects design and other forms of audio asset creation) or audio engineering (the design and manufacture of audio software). The integrated curriculum includes music theory and composition, studio recording, sound synthesis, soundtrack production, audio mastering and audio software development. Students learn a wide range of concepts fundamental to digital audio and engage in numerous hands-on assignments that culminate in a year-long senior portfolio project.
- Entrepreneurship and Innovation Entrepreneurship and Innovation
This program offers a full-immersion, hands-on education to learn the concepts of creating new ventures and innovation in a start-up or innovative company environment. Participants experience how to plan, launch and grow a leading edge project or venture, while those in the digital media specialty undergo a full complement of classes in an area of digital media, such as design and animation, game design, digital sound, or game engineering as well as a deep understanding of entrepreneurship in the digital media field. They are trained to combine the knowledge, knowhow and networks with integrated hands-on practice to create and evaluate entrepreneurial opportunities, find people and financial resources to launch and grow a venture, lead a venture through various stages of growth, and the factors most likely to influence the entrepreneur's success.
- Software EngineeringSoftware Engineering
The courses of this program cover software development cycle: Design, analysis, verification, validation, implementation, deployment and maintenance, with specializations in Software Development and Testing, Computer Networking, Graphics, Real-Time Simulation, and Game Engine Programming. Students acquire the skills to undertake large scale programming projects, study the latest trends in software development, design and testing, as well as gaining familiarity with interface, tools, and game engines programming.
